History of the Eastern Sierra Symphony

In 1978, Maestro Bogidar Avramov, who was then head of the Loyola Marymont Music Department and conductor of the Beverly Hills Symphony, helped to found the Sierra Summer Festival in Mammoth Lakes, Ca. In the ealrly years, Hillside seating and picnics were popular at these concerts. Workshops of all types were offered to broaden the visitor experience. Thanks to the hard work and determination of the first members of The Festival Committee, the Sierra Summer Festival perservered through difficult economic climates and continued to grow.

Eventually, the Eastern Sierra Symphony Orchestra was founded. It began as a chamber orchestra and grew into the full-sized orchestra you can see and hear today. The Eastern Sierra Symphony Orchestra is a combination of local musicians and professionals from orchestras around the country incuding The LA Phiharmonic, LA Opera Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, and Saint Louis Symphony, who also serve as master teachers for the gifted young musicians who participate in the festival. Many of these students attend some of the top tier music schools in the country including Juliard, New England Conservatory, Boston University, Curtis Institute, and the Colburn School.

Nearly 40 years later, The Eastern Sierra Symphony continues to strengthen the performing arts movement and the vibrant arts community in the mountain community of Mammoth Lakes.
